At the Casino or on the Couch? Weighing up casino vs. online betting

Jack Monaghan weighs up the benefits and drawbacks of both betting in-person at the casinos and playing casino games online.

Over the last two years sports betting has become legal in a variety of states across the country. Nevada and Delaware were the first two states with New Jersey quickly following suit on June 11th of 2018. Gamblers have a variety of ways in which they can choose to bet on sports from going online to betting in a casino and Sportsbook retail shop. There are many differences between the two options. Some people enjoy the thrill of being in the setting of a large crowd with music playing in the background and TV screens set up all throughout the room, while some prefer to do their gambling from the comfort of their homes.

In todays article, I will be focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of both options. Betting at a casino certainly has a lot of advantages to it, with the main one being the overall enjoyable atmosphere. The environment that a casino has to offer makes this option a very attractive one, especially for younger people who enjoy the night life and can now add betting on live sports to their Friday night plans. When watching the games at home your options are somewhat limited as to how many games a viewer can consume at once. When at a casino, there are multiple TV’s set up throughout the room which allows an individual to follow each game they have placed a wager on and keep up with how each one is playing out.

Another advantage of betting at a casino is you have access to all the casino games and can keep yourself entertained by playing black jack or spades with a large group of people and perhaps have an opportunity to win even more money by betting on your favorite card game or slot machine. A lot of young people enjoy the night life and going out to a casino to have a few drinks with friends, and placing some bets on a few games is a very appealing option but there are also some disadvantages that come with going to a live casino to bet on sports.

One of the disadvantages of going to a casino is that you must fill out a slip to place a bet on a game and this can often mean standing in a long line of anxious people which can certainly be a turnoff. As mentioned above, being at a casino also brings a lot of temptations such as spending too much money on drinks and gambling away your money at the slot machine or black jack table.

When in the comfort of your home, none of these distractions are at your fingertips which can often be a good thing. Casinos can also be intimidating to some people and they may get overwhelmed by all the action that is taking place and in this case staying home and placing your bets online can be the best way to go.

Placing your bets online also has both its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages to using an online app to place your bets is the fact that it is much simpler and much less time consuming. Instead of planning your night around going to a casino, one can simply go on an app and place a bet on any game they want from wherever they are. This has an appeal to a lot of people because they can take their time and don’t have to worry about standing in line or being in a loud environment. You also have a lot more options when it comes to online gambling as there are so many websites you can use to place your bets and you have the freedom of finding which one you like to use best.

However, online betting does have its challenges. The first is downloading the app which can be a difficult process for somebody who may not be the most tech savvy person in the world. You then must create an account and put in your credit card information which can tend to be a tedious process.

As mentioned before, there is a long list of betting apps to choose from and while that can certainly be an advantage it can also lead to some frustration about trying to find the right one to use. Draft kings and Fan Duel are two of the most popular online betting apps, but the industry is a growing one and all the options that are available to a user can certainly become overwhelming. The payment process is also an aspect of online gambling that can bring about some challenges.

When going to a casino, no account is needed and all you must do is simply fill out a slip and you’re good to go, but with online betting you must create an account and put your credit card information in and this can sometimes be a process that people would rather avoid.

However you choose to go about the betting process, there are advantages and disadvantages to both and at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference and which avenue the gambler is more comfortable with. If you’re looking to spend the night out with some friends, then the casino route is probably your best bet. If you’re trying to have a lazy night at home with your feet kicked up then going online and placing your bets through an app is certainly a desirable option as well.
