New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed legalizing online gambling in order to help with increasing tax revenues for the state of post-COVID but how can people gamble online in NY at the moment?
NY Online Gambling Laws
There is currently no legal online gambling anywhere in the state of New York. Anyone who wants to play casino games has to go to one of the states land based casinos in order to gamble.
In person sports betting is currently legal in NY thanks to an act passed in 2013 and a regulatory framework in 2019 which allows wagers to be placed at land based sportsbooks within casinos.
Anyone over the age of 21 can enter the casinos and can play table games or place sports wagers at the sportsbook.
How to gamble online in NY
It is currently not possible to gamble online in New York via any of the land based NY casinos or sportsbooks. However, residents of New York are still able to open online casino gambling or sports betting accounts via those available in bordering states.
New Yorkers are able to open online accounts at any of the New Jersey online casinos and can even make deposits into their accounts from their home in NY state. However, in order to place any bets, play any online table games or online slots, they will have to physically be within the New Jersey state borders.
Free Bets for NY Residents
The fact that NY residents can open online gambling accounts means that they can also load up on Free Bets and start to build their online betting experience before any potential New York gambling legalization which may occur in the near future.
The following Free Bets are currently available for NY residents via the New Jersey online casinos.
When Will NY Legalize Online Gambling?
New Yorkers may not have to continue to travel to neighboring New Jersey or to Pennsylvania to bet legally online. Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed that NY legalize online gambling in order to help with the tax revenue deficit caused by the COVID lockdowns.
The proposals are not yet approved and it may be some time before there is legal NY gambling but that doesn’t mean New Yorkers need to miss out on online gambling – they just need to be willing to travel for a few years.
NY Online Sports Betting
New York looks almost certain to go live with legal online sports betting either before, or at the same time, as iGaming. As bettors can currently bet on sports at in the NY state casinos, it makes sense that the extension for online gambling would include online sports betting.
It is anticipated that NY online sports betting would look very similar, if not the same, as that of New Jersey or Pennsylvania and it would be the same brands with market access. However, there is an option of a single state lottery run sports betting product, as is the case in Oregon.
