The Solar Array Project by MGM Resorts becomes the hospitality industry’s largest directly sourced renewable electricity project worldwide.
This week, MGM Resorts International launched its 100-megawatt solar array. This is the hospitality industry’s largest directly sourced renewable electricity project worldwide and produces up to 90% of MGM Resorts’ Las Vegas daytime power needs. It is colossal, producing power for 65 million square feet of buildings across 13 Las Vegas properties and more than 36,000 rooms on the Vegas strip.
While generating considerably impressive publicity for the brand, MGM Resorts is also contributing to the fight against climate change. The project marks a milestone in MGM Resorts’ long-term climate strategy. Plus, it significantly accelerates progress toward the company’s 2025 goal to reduce the company’s emissions by 45% per square foot.
Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak said,
“MGM Resorts has long been Nevada’s largest private employer and has shown a clear commitment to using their size and scale to lead on important issues like climate change, renewable energy and sustainability. This solar array is among the most significant steps our industry has taken in terms of tackling climate change and promoting renewable energy. Powering so much of the Strip with clean, renewable energy sends a powerful message about Nevada’s role as a national leader in renewable energy and our commitment to fighting climate change.”
The solar array project consists of 323,000 solar panels across 640 acres. MGM Resorts is the sole user of the renewable energy generated. The scheme will not only help to power Las Vegas for its daily running, but will also allow MGM to retain its spot at the top of the Vegas scene as both a reputable casino brand and a socially responsible organization.
The MGM Resorts solar array project will help to power sites such as:
When the F1 comes to the Las Vegas Strip, we are sure that the solar array project will play some part in the event. After all, the majority of the Strip is now owned by MGM Resorts.
