Casino gambling is actually possible in the state of Indiana. There are currently 12 land based or riverboat casinos, two racetracks with casinos and one Indian casino in the state.

These are the only legal gaming license holders and it is only these operators who can hold permits for online gambling, although they are legally allowed to share their licenses with designated sportsbook apps.

The state collects a 9.5% tax from online gambling revenues. Despite this, there are no casino gambling options in Indiana for online players. Those wishing to gamble on casino games must go to one of the state’s land based or riverboat casinos.

The basic requirements for opening an Online betting account in Indiana are:

  • Player Must be Over 21
  • Player Must be a Resident of United States of America
  • Player Must be Within Indiana State Lines When Playing
  • Player Must Not Be Self-Excluded of Banned from Gambling

The above requirements are done by providing the casino with the following information, which will be required on sign up for all Indiana Online betting accounts:

  • Payment or Banking Information

When providing this information, the Casino can verify the identity of a player and that they are eligible to play on the Casino games.

Verifying Your Online Casino Account in Indiana

Many people balk at the idea of being asked to provide additional verification documents for online betting but everything is done in order to comply with the Indiana gambling laws.

The Casinos themselves are duty bound to handle all information with care and must never divulge any details to any third parties. The same security and safety procedures that are in place when you share your information with the Casino or Hotel in person are in place for protecting player data online as well.

The Casino may, therefore, request the following verification information:

  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of Driving License
  • Utility Bill
  • Social Security Number

These documents are used to check against databases for identification purposes and to verify that no-one is either trying to open an account fraudulently in someone else’s name, or that the player has either been banned or excluded from gambling at Indiana Casinos.

Funding Online Sports Betting in Indiana

As with all forms of banking or money transfer, there are strict regulations around funding online betting accounts in Indiana. These are often down to neither the state nor the sportsbooks themselves, but the banks, who haven’t managed to yet catch up with the sports betting bills.

Unfortunately, many banks still class sports betting as a form of money advancement and individual banks have their own rules regarding whether you can use a Credit Card, Debit Card or an ACH Transfer in order to fund your online betting account.

Our advice is to instead use the likes of PayPal, Skrill or one of the Play+ Cards offered by the sportsbook themselves. These can all be funded by any form of payment and will allow for near instant withdrawal either at ATMs or to use the funds online for purchases.

Free Bets Available to Indiana Residents

As sports betting is very new, there are often special introductory offers available for those looking to try out this new pastime without risking their own funds, or before linking a bank account to a sportsbook.

Indiana Online Gambling History

In 1851, the state of Indiana voted to amend the constitution to outlaw lotteries. As a result, all forms of gambling were illegal in the state. Gambling went into a ‘black market’ for the next 130 years.

In 1988, voters in Indiana approved a new constitutional amendment. It repealed most of the 1851 amendment as far as a state-regulated lottery went. The Hoosier Lottery also began operations at this time. This new legislation allowed betting on horse racing in the Hoosier State.

In 1993, state legislation allowed 11 water-based casino game licenses. Five were given to Lake Michigan, five to the Ohio River and one to Patoka Lake. The state’s gambling economy continued to grow and, in 1994, Hoosier Park was opened as the first racetrack in Indiana.

Indianas casino gambling landscape grew year on year, with bills being passed and rescinded many times due to conflict between bodies concerned. In 2016, Indiana took one step further by offering regulated Daily Fantasy Sports. Indiana’s DFS sites FanDuel and DraftKings became embroiled in a huge court case. After years of back and forth, they were finally left to operate as the leading DFS sites they are now.

On May 8, 2019, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed a bill which legalized both land-based and online sportsbooks, putting the Indiana Gaming Commission in charge of its regulation in the process. Indiana gambling history was made on September 1 when the first legal physical sportsbooks began taking bets. Online sports betting in the state launched shortly after, in October 2019.
