South Dakota allows both sports betting and casino gambling, but only in authorised sportsbooks located inside casinos in Deadwood or at tribal gaming establishments. Bets must be placed in person. Though the state is now home to some legal casino and other forms of gambling, South Dakota was once its own little gaming hotpot, in the days before the industry was legitimized as a tourist trade.

In addition to the nine tribal casinos spread around the state, South Dakota is home to over 12 commercial gambling establishments in the historic Gold Rush town of Deadwood.

Numerous forms of gaming are permitted under South Dakota law. In South Dakota, there is also a state lottery and charitable gaming is permitted. Residents of South Dakota are permitted to play video lottery terminals with low stakes at pubs and taverns. The state allows brick-and-mortar casinos to provide slot machines, blackjack and poker games. 

Daily Fantasy Sports

Pari-mutuel wagering on horse and greyhound races is also legal in South Dakota. Daily fantasy sports betting is not currently governed by legislation, although certain businesses practise it in the state like DraftKing and FanDuel.

There is some sports betting permitted at Deadwood retail sportsbooks. This happened a year after state voters authorised Deadwood to put sports betting on the 2020 ballot.

Even though South Dakota is gradually moving towards legalising online gaming, it’s possible that this won’t happen anytime soon.

South Dakota Sports Betting Laws

Except for pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing websites all forms of internet gambling are illegal in the state. The lone exception is Deadwood casinos’ September 2021 launch of internet sports betting.

Players may now use kiosks, betting windows, and mobile devices to put wagers on their preferred sports team. However, as internet sports betting is only permitted in Deadwood city boundaries, you must be there. The remainder of the state is now off-limits.

Additionally, it is not possible to wager on regional sports teams. Betting on in-state college teams is prohibited per the rule. However, betting on collegiate teams from states other than South Dakota is permitted. This is a wise move as the state gradually broadens the laws. Given that sports betting is already accepted in Deadwood, there is a chance that it will spread to other regions of the state.

Lottery

The state does have a lottery that residents can play. However, South Dakota laws prohibit the internet sale of lottery tickets. There is a mobile app for the South Dakota Lottery that enables users to scan tickets and get data about jackpots and promos.
